Vaccines Before Biologics: What Every IBD Provider Should Know
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the importance of assessing vaccination status in patients with IBD prior to initiating biologic or other advanced immunosuppressive therapies
- Identify key vaccines recommended for patients with IBD before starting biologic therapy, including inactivated and live vaccines.
- Determine appropriate timing of vaccine administration in relation to biologic initiation to maximize safety and immune response.
- Recognize vaccines that are contraindicated once patients with IBD are receiving biologic therapy.

Dr. Cara Pray MD, MB BCh BAO, FRCPC
Dr. Cara Pray is a gastroenterologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine at McMaster University, based at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. Her clinical and academic focus is on complex inflammatory bowel disease, with particular interst in advanced therapies and pre-conception and pregnancy care in patients with IBD. She is actively involved in medical education and quality improvement and is developing a dedicated IBD Pregnancy Clinic within the McMaster GI program. With extensive experience in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Care, Dr. Cara Dawn Pray serves as a trusted medical specialist. Practicing in Hamilton, ON, she provides comprehensive care in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Care, adhering to the standards set by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). Her focus is on adult patients, including seniors, ensuring personalized and evidence-based management of complex health conditions. Dr. Pray graduated with a Medical Degree from the National University of Ireland in 2018. She has completed extensive post-graduate medical training, including residency and fellowship programs focused on internal medicine and geriatrics. Her certifications reflect her commitment to ongoing professional development and excellence in patient care.
